The past week has been a roller coaster of rumors about the production of the Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. First word came that the series was cancelled after sources told Collider that the show was experiencing troubles. Then clarification came in saying the the show was not cancelled but delayed after the crew at the Pinewood Studios were sent home. Collider and IGN reported that the Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was not happy with the script. Many rumors have swirled like THR reporting that only two of the scripts were completed despite the statement at D23 that they were done and the report from IGN that the script ended up being too close the The Mandalorian.
After all these different rumors, one thing we could agree on was this show was not going to be coming in as schedule. But Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor, said to IGN during a Birds of Prey interview that the show is still expected for the unannounced release date that they have planned. That essentially instead of shooting in August that they will be shooting in January. The full statement is below.
“It’s just slid to next year, that’s all. The scripts were really good. I think now that Episode IX came out and everyone at Lucasfilm’s got more time to spend on the writing, they felt like they wanted more time to spend on the writing.” McGregor said to IGN. “I’ve read about eighty, ninety percent of what they’ve written so far, and it’s really, really good. Instead of shooting this August, they just want to start shooting in January, that’s all. Nothing more dramatic than that. It often happens in projects, they just wanted to push it to next year. It will have the same release date, I don’t think it will affect the release date. They’re still shooting towards having the film [show] release when it was going to be originally.”
So we can hope that the extra time going into the series will only make it better. They have a lot to live up to after the success of The Mandalorian. If there are anymore changes to the production we will update you here.
