NFL and 2K Games United Again

NFL 2K1 for Sega Dreamcast

2K Games and the NFL have signed a multi-year deal for a new set of games with the first expected in 2021. 2K Games made NFL games from 1999-2004 called NFL 2K. The NFL then turned their focus to EA with the Madden Franchise. Little is known about these new games from 2K but they described them as “non-simulation football game experiences”. This won’t be a simple football playing game like you would expect from Madden.

Joe Ruggiero, Senior VP of Consumer Products at the NFL Stated:

“Expanding the NFL’s presence in the world of gaming has become a focus for the League as we look to grow the next generation of our fanbase and reviving our partnership with 2K was a natural step in that effort. 2K is a worldwide leader in sports video games, with a proven track record of creating best-in-class and award-winning games and we look forward to sharing more about the projects we are working on with them in the future.”

Other football based games in the past could be used as reference to what 2K could develop. There was the Street titles that simulated the kind of games played in the backyard or a city park. The NFL Blitz games were football turned to 11. The ball would even catch on fire if you were dominating your opponent. Lastly, we could get a game that leans into the front office experience. Games like Football Manager are more about the team building and less on the game itself. This could be adapted to American Football very easily. 2K has always made very fun football titles and it’s good to have them back in the fold.
