Spider-Man Spinoff Finds It’s Director

Sony has been working to expand its Marvel Cinematic Spider-Verse, and just took a big step forward with a new director for one of their spinoffs.

Madame-WebEarly rumors are saying the new spinoff will follow Madame Web, a blind elderly woman with myasthenia gravis that keeps her connected to a web-like life support system. She also has clairvoyance and precognitive visions as a mutant power. This would create a hurdle for MCSV as mutants have not been introduced in this or the MCU universes yet. Madame Web has been a wise mentor to Spider-Man, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in November 1980. This film has two options, it can show an early life of Cassandra Webb and her path to Madame Web or it can focus on her death and predecessor Julia Carpenter. The first option could be a period piece set in the ’80s (very fashionable right now) and build up villains that would return in the present-day for Spider-Man. The latter option could have Madame Web mentoring Julia Carpenter before giving Julia her abilities.

Clarkson is mostly known for her work on The Defenders and Jessica Jones. With those in her resume, we can assume this will be a ground-level hero film, taking place on the gritty streets of New York. This will be Clarkson’s first film, but her evident skill is proof it won’t be her last. Madame Web will be written by Matt Sazama Burk Sharpless, who wrote Morbius.
