Johnny Depp is stepping down from the Fantastical Beasts franchise. He has portrayed the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald for the first two films. This follows accusations of domestic abuse against his ex-wife Amber Heard reported by UK’s The Sun. In a defamation suit, the judge stated the reporting was “substantially true.” After this, Warner Bros. asked Depp to step down. A WB representative told Nerdist that they will be recasting the Grindelwald role.
“Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date. Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2022.”
