Disney Investor Day 2020 Announcements

Wow! Disney announced a pile of new content and revealed some major trailers on the 10th. Let’s go over the long stream of announcements.

Disney kicked open the door by revealing over the next few years they will be premiering about 10 Marvel series, 10 Star Wars series, 15 Disney live-action, animated and Pixar series, and 15 featurettes all on Disney Plus.

The new animated film Raya and the Last Dragon will premiere in theaters and Disney Plus Premium on March 5, 2021.

Star and Star Plus

Disney Plus currently has 137 million subscribers. They will be launching in additional regions including Eastern Europe, South Korea, Hong Kong, and more. Disney will be launching a new service called Star and Star Plus. This platform will be the international home for Disney, Hulu, Fox, ESPN, and other properties. Star will be integrated into some markets that already have Disney Plus. Star launches on February 23, 2021.

Hulu

Hulu is stepping things up! In the US, Hulu will begin producing their own films and series using the 20th Century Studio property recently acquired by Disney. Next year, ESPN will be available with Hulu for an additional charge.

Hulu will be getting a new line up of high budget series.

  • Only Murders in the Building – Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez
  • The Dropout – Kate McKinnon plays Elizabeth Holmes
  • Dopesick – Michael Keaton, Rosario Dawson, and Peter Sarsgaard in a new drama series
  • Nine Perfect Stranger – Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy in a new thriller from David E. Kelley
  • The Handmaid’s Tale – Season 4 in 2021 and renewed for Season 5!

FX

The next slate of shows are all FX. They can be watched on Hulu for an additional charge.

  • The Old Man – Jeff Bridges plays a former CIA agent revisiting his past
  • American Horror Stories – This is a new anthology horror series
  • Platform – Tackles today’s biggest issues in an anthology series
  • Reservation Dogs – New comedy series about Native American teenagers growing up an a reservation in Oklahoma
  • Y: The Last Man – Drama based on the acclaimed comic series
  • Alien – A series from the Alien franchise…Hyped!
  • Shogun – a retelling of the James Clavell classic saga
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – Renewed for 4 more seasons!

ESPN

ESPN Plus is teaming up with SEC to bring the biggest college football games to you. Starting January, ESPN Plus will start a new morning show that will recap the previous day’s sports. This sounds like the nightly Sports Center. Stephen A Smith will be getting his own series on the streaming service. A new docu-series about Tom Brady is on the way, and Peyton’s Place is coming back for a third season.

Star Wars

New season recap trailer for The Mandalorian Season 2

Ranger of the New Republic – A series in the same timeframe of The Mandalorian. I predict this will likely follow a coupe of X-Wing pilots acting as the law in the outer rims.

Ahsoka – Rosario Dawson is back for Ahsoka’s very own series! Also set during The Mandalorian.

Andor – A series following Cassian Andor of Rogue One. Diego Luna returns for the series! Will focus on the early rebellion.

Obi-Wan Kenobi – We got a title teaser for the new Kenobi series. We also learned that the series will take place 10 years after Episode Three and bring back both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen.

The Bad Batch – New trailer for the Clone Wars spinoff series about a special ops clone squadron.

Star Wars: Visions – This will be a new series of short films by Japanese anime creators.

Lando – A new Lando Calrissian series is in early development by Justin Simien.

The Acolyte – Our first High Republic series that will delve into the rise of the Sith’s dark side powers. In early development.

A Droid Series – A new animated series that follows the epic adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2.

Willow – A sequel series the the classic movie from Lucasfilm. Coming 2022!

New Indiana Jones – Lucasfilm is in pre production on the next Indy. The are bringing back Harrison Ford. Expected July 2022.

Children of Blood and Bone – New Lucasfilm project that will tell the story of a young African girl seeking to return magic to her people.

New Star Wars Movie – Taika Waititi is developing a new Star Wars film.

Rogue Squadron – Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is creating a Rogue Squadron film! Huge news and a non-jedi Star Wars movie.

NatGeo

NatGeo has a whole new slate of projects on the way

  • Cousteau – Jacques Cousteau documentary
  • Genius: Martin Luther King Jr – Explores the life of MLK
  • Secrets of Whales – Series following explorers and whales
  • A Real Bug’s Life – A docu series about our smaller critters
  • America the Beautiful – Explores North America and its iconic species

Disney Plus

Disney Plus was a focal point of the days announcements. Here are some more!

  • Mighty Ducks: Game Changers – A series following the original movies. Emilio Estevez is back and is joined by Lauren Graham.
  • Turner & Hutch – A reboot series that partners a cop with a slobbering dog
  • Big Shot – New series involving empowering high school women in basketball. Staring Yvette Nicole Brown, John Stamos, and Jessalyn Gilsig
  • The Mysterious Benedict Society – Based on the classic book series. Stars Tony Hale and Kristen Shcaaled. Comedy gold with that casting!
  • Kardashians – No exact name yet but the family signed on for a multiyear deal with Disney Plus and Hulu

Wouldn’t be Disney announcements without some big movies revealed.

  • Hocus Pocus 2 – Disney Plus Exclusive
  • Three Men and a Baby – Reboot of the 80s classic
  • Safety – Story inspired by former Clemson University football safety Ray McELrathBey. Out now on Disney Plus
  • Three New Sports Films – They will tell the stories of Chris Paul, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Keanon Lowe
  • Flora and Ulysses – A young comic book fan and her superpowered squirrel team up
  • Cheaper by the Dozen – A reimagining of the classic story. Produced by “Blackish” producer Kenya Barris
  • Chip and Dale Rescue Ranger – hybrid live-action and animated. John Mulaney plays Chip and Andy Sandberg play Dale.
  • The Little Mermaid – Reveal of the cast for the live-action remake
  • Diary of a Wimpy – Getting a new animated film for Disney Plus
  • Pinocchio – Live-action adaptation starring Tom Hanks
  • Peter Pan and Wendy – Title teaser for the new live-action reboot. (Disney like their live-action reboots)
  • Disenchanted – A sequel to Enchanted . Amy Adams will be back
  • Sister Act 3 – Whoopi Goldberg returns to star and produce

Disney Animation is getting into the series business for the first time. The will be making series for Baymax, Zootopia, Moana, and Tiana.

Disney is teaming up with Pan-African entertainment company Kagali to make a new science fiction series called Iwájú. Coming 2022!

New Disney Animation film called Encanto. It follows a magical family in a magical home in columbia.

Pixar

New Pixar series called Dug Days. Tells the story of Dug from UP in the unfamiliar world of the suburbs. They will also be making a road trip series starring Lightning McQueen and Mater coming 2022. The third series from Pixar is called Win or Lose. It follows a middle school baseball team as they try to win it all.

Next Pixar film is Turning Red. Directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi. Features Mei, a teenager that turns into a giant red panda when she gets too excited. Hits theaters March 11, 2022.

Lightyear is in the works! This Pixar movie is the story of the original Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on. Buzz will be voiced by Captain America’s Chris Evans. Blast of on June 17, 2022

Marvel

New trailer for WandaVision! Premiers Jan 15th on Disney Plus

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness debuts March 25, 2022. The film will tie in WandaVision and the next Spider-Man film.

The long wait is almost over! The Falcon and the Winter Soldier joins Disney Plus on March 19th. We also get our first trailer!

New trailer for the Loki Series. Coming May 2021!

Trailer for Marvel’s What If…? animated anthology series.

Production has just wrapped on Shang-Chi and the entire cast is revealed.

The Ms. Marvel series is in the works. They have casted Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. Premiers late 2021.

Captain Marvel 2 starts development and Ms. Marvel is tagging along. Expected November 11, 2022.

New original series with Samuel L Jackson’s Fury and the Skrull Talos. This time they will be uncovering the Secret Invasion!

Ironheart is a new series with Riri Williams as the next Iron suit avenger. We will also be getting more Iron suit battle in Armor Wars. A series about multiple countries and companies creating their own suits. Can War Machine stop them?

Christmas 2022 just got better with The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special. James Gunn is writing and directing. He later tweeted that he was surprised Disney was going to let him make this and that he was a fan of the old Star Wars special.

Baby Groot is back for a series of shorts that will premiere on Disney Plus. Can we get him and Baby Yoda teaming up?

Batman’s Christian Bale joins ThorL Love and Thunder as the villain Gor the God Butcher. Coming May 6, 2022!

Ant-Man and the Wap: Quantumania will be the third Ant-Man film. Kathryn Newton joins the cast as Cassie Lang and Jonathan Majors will play Kang the Conqueror.

Black Panther 2 will be written and directed by Ryan Coogler. They will honor Chadwick Boseman by not recasting T’Challa. The new film will focus more on Wakanda and the other characters.

Jon Watts will direct the MCU’s Fantastic Four movie!
