Marvel fandom is a buzz on Monday when a new interview with MCU boss Kevin Feige revealed Deadpool will be rated R. The interview from Collider is the first proof from a Marvel or Disney executive that Deadpool would stay true to its form after the Fox merger. Ryan Reynolds has stated so in the past, but it really all comes down to Feige. He is in charge of the wider Marvel vision, and his blessing means he knows a way to blend the forth wall breaking assassin into a “family-friendly” Marvel Universe.
“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Fans took to social media to celebrate and speculate. Many worried Deadpool would never be the same in the House of Mouse. He is extremely edgy, and anything under an R rating would feel like a throttle on the creative team.

With this new R rating, could we see similar projects get the same treatment. One such project is the Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali. Blade needs the blood and gore to really capture the feel of the comics at all. The new series, Moonknight will also need a mature audience. It’s a gritty story, complex disorder, and violence on another level.
Today’s news could be a sign that Marvel is going to widen its audience and take these projects more seriously. Do you think an R rating is important for a film like Deadpool? Let us know in the comments or on our socials!
