Open-World Star Wars Game in the Works at Ubisoft

Wednesday morning, CEO Yves Guillemont revealed Ubisoft is working on an open-world Star Wars game. This new project will be in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.

Julian Gerighty – Creative Director

Ubisoft is tapping The Division 2’s Julian Gerighty as creative director. Julian claims they want to create something “totally different” than past Ubisoft games. The company announced a few years ago that they would be moving away from their typical formula. Most Ubisoft games were open-world and had players unlocking sections of the map to reveal new main and side missions. The formula was repeated in all their staple games like Assassin’s Creed, Fallout, and The Division. The new Star Wars game will be open world, but we don’t know what other changes Ubisoft will be making to create unique gameplay.

This is also a departure from Star Wars’ normal publisher EA. EA has come under pressure after a slew of lackluster Star Wars titles. They finally found success with Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019. After Lucasfilm announced their Games division on the 11th, it signified that Star Wars was taking control of their games once again. Ubisoft can use this opportunity to prove to the industry that they have evolved and can be the home for a popular Star Wars franchise.
