Spoilers for The Mandalorian S3E4
The Mandalorian Season 3 episode 4 brings back Ahmed Best to the Star Wars franchise, but not as the much-reviled Jar Jar Binks. Best returns as Jedi Master Kelleran Beq, a character from the web series Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge, who supervises Padawans undergoing trials to become Jedi Knights. While Jedi Temple Challenge may not be part of the official Star Wars lore, Beq’s in-universe role is the same as it was in the web series. The Mandalorian also reveals that Beq played a critical role in helping Grogu escape during the events of Order 66, the series of events that led to the near extinction of the Jedi Order.
Best’s return to Star Wars is significant because of the negative backlash he faced as Jar Jar Binks. The backlash took a heavy psychological toll on the actor, who revealed in a tweet that he struggled with suicidal thoughts during that dark period. The Mandalorian offers Best a chance to leave his mark on the franchise again, this time as a character defined by heroism and compassion in the midst of battle. Best’s Mandalorian role is a welcome reminder that some Star Wars actors can find redemption by returning to the franchise.
The episode leaves us wondering about Beq and Grogu’s future in the series. What’s next for the two characters who escaped together aboard a Naboo starfighter while guards heroically sacrificed themselves? Fans are eagerly waiting to find out.
