Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, is working on a variety of new movies and sequels for his animation empire, as well as producing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which is due to be released on April 5. Illumination is also developing follow-ups to franchises like “Sing,” “Despicable Me,” and “Secret Life of Pets,” as well as original films like “Migration.” Meledandri also serves as a creative partner to DreamWorks Animation as it reboots the “Shrek” franchise. Negotiations with the original cast, which includes Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy, are reportedly going well. Meledandri is looking for a fresh way to return to the world of pets, with scripts currently being developed for “The Secret Life of Pets.” Meledandri is also working on “Sing 3,” which he promises will involve characters from the original cast but take us into a new world. “Sing 2” generated more than $400 million at the box office, and while it had the misfortune of being released as the omicron COVID variant was spreading, the sequel was a streaming smash.
