Disney+ and Hulu are set to become one app as Disney plans to fully purchase Hulu from Comcast. The news was confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger during the company’s Q2 earnings call. Disney currently owns two-thirds of the streaming service, with Comcast’s co-ownership allowing for Hulu to feature a wider range of content.
Iger explained that while Disney would continue to offer Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ as standalone options, the move was a logical progression for their direct-to-consumer offerings. The combined platform would offer greater opportunities for advertisers while giving bundle subscribers access to more robust and streamlined content. This would result in greater audience engagement and ultimately lead to a more unified streaming experience.
The acquisition would also make it easier for all content under the Disney umbrella to potentially come to Disney+, assuming the name remains the same once Hulu is incorporated. The deadline for a decision is January 2024, so it remains to be seen what other business decisions will follow this news.
