Audible Review: Star Trek Voyager – Architects of Infinity

First Time With Audible

Being my first Audible book I really enjoyed the experience. I would mostly listen while driving or cleaning the house. Sometimes I found myself so focused on the story that I would be standing in front of the sink with dirty dishes in my hands just listening. The app keeps my place, and it’s easy to jump back 30 seconds when I’ve stepped away for a while and want to remember where I was before I get back to the story.

Narration: January LaVoy

This book was very well narrated. As with all Star Trek stories, this one has a wide range of very different characters, and I feel the narrator did a good job giving them each a different sound and personality.

Story: Author – Kirsten Beyer

This story was a mix of emotions. Overall I say it was good, but the main plotline left me a little disappointed. Much of the story was character-driven, analyzing complex challenges between crew member relationships and personal dilemmas. It reflected some of our modern controversial topics in a perspective that can be better understood in a science-fiction context. What best drew my attention was the main story arch about a strange new planet and alien technology they discovered. Parts of this were described so vividly I could only imagine the budget I would request to have this made into a movie with James Cameron at the helm. A mix of mystical beauty with a touch of horror. Alas, what disappointed me was the great reveal. Beyer did a good job at getting me hyped up but at the big reveal, I was a little underwhelmed. It’s hard to say much about it without spoiling the story, but I feel like it could have had a greater meaning behind it all. With that being said, it did leave an open thread to lead to the next book that might help validate this ending. So I reserve the right to change my opinion later. The next book in this series is Star Trek Voyager: To Lose The Earth. I am eager to read the next installment, but I think I might roll it back to the beginning of this series and read them in order.

This was a good story and really made me want more Voyager and the full circle fleet. I can’t wait to read more.

California Adventure Partially Opens

Disney California Adventure will partially open for dining and shopping in November. All rides and attractions will remain close. This will help the company as they can still take advantage of the Holiday boom the park typically experiences. Downtown Disney has been open since July, with safety procedures in place. These precautions will also be used in the park including required masks and limiting occupants. California Adventure is next to Disneyland and features a 50’s Hollywood themed main street, Pixar Pier, Carsland, and wilderness themed dining. All celebrating California. No news yet on whether or not Disneyland itself will also open for shopping and dining.

Luther Strode Film in the Works

Image’s The Strange Talent of Luther Strode is being adapted into a film. This is being produced by the newly created Allnighter studio. They are bringing in comic creators Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore.

Luther Strode is the story of a teen who orders a comic book catalog. He instead received a manual for an ancient cult called The Method. As Strode follows the manual, he becomes stronger, faster, and violent. The series is one of the three tentpoles of Image Comics’ new generation alongside Walking Dead and Saga.

We just got a trailer for Godzilla Singular Point. A show that brings in some heavy hitters from around the industry.

Also revealed were new images from an upcoming Resident Evil and Pacific Rim Anime. These look to be good entry points for those unfamiliar with the anime genre. Mixing western hits with anime style.

Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Coming to Netflix

Netflix has been busy today!

Assassin’s Creed is part of the Ubisoft agreement that will also give us an AC anime. Ubisoft’s new Film and TV department will produce the series. We don’t know what part of AC will be used. Presumably, they will stick closely to the games with Ubisoft on as producers. Personally, Ezio’s story is an easy slam dunk and should be their focus.

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that ‘Assassin’s Creed’ is beloved for. From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Cyberpunk has gone through many delays this year due to an ambitious project, new console generation, and of course COVID. The last news out of CD Projekt Red was the announcement of “Crunch” use. This was to avoid another delay but it wasn’t enough.

Pixar’s Soul Releasing on Disney + for No Additional Charge

Pixar’s Soul is skipping the continuous delays and coming straight to Disney + on Christmas day. Best of all, the film will not come at an additional cost like Mulan and it’s $30 price tag. Soul was originally planned for a theatrical release on November 20th but was delayed like so many other movies due to COVID concerns.

What is it that makes you…YOU? This December, Pixar Animation Studios’ all-new feature film “Soul” introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions. Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter (“Inside Out,” “Up”), co-directed by Kemp Powers (“One Night in Miami”) and produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray, p.g.a. (Pixar short “Lou”), Disney and Pixar’s “Soul” is streaming exclusively December 25, 2020 on Disney+.

Wolfenstein and Dishonored Collections Coming

Baethesda joining the Xbox family shook the gaming industry. The signs of this new union started with Doom Eternal being added to the Game Pass catalog. We have also had rumblings of Xbox being open on Bethesda’s exclusivity, giving PlayStation owners some hope. Today is the next chapter in this developing story; Zenimax collections are coming to Xbox. Similar to the popular Mater Chief Collection, Xbox will soon have collection games of the Wolfenstein and Dishonored franchises.

In the Wolfenstein Collection you will likely be getting Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood. We only have the price for the current gen so far, set at $79.99.

Game coming from the Arkane collections are Dishonored, Dishonored 2, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, and the acclaimed Prey. Price for this collection is at $59.99.

We know these collection will be available for both Xbox and PlayStation. We will be getting versions for each generation as well. The news comes from a posting on Best Buy’s site with no confirmation from the publishers. Both set have award winning games that should be in every gamer’s collection.

Batman Narrative Podcast coming to Spotify

Batman Unburied

Podcasts and audiobooks are on the rise lately. Some podcasters become celebrities and companies like Audible are household names. With the resurgence of the audio medium, a classic is coming back. Audio dramas were the focus of the family every night in the 1940s but now we are seeing big companies investing in them again for podcasts and audiobooks. One of the most notable is DC Comics who recently produced The Sandman. Their next project is a Batman podcast drama called Batman Unburied. Spotify has secured the exclusive license, the latest in Spotify’s attempt to dominate the podcast market. The story is new but promises to be a darker look into the Dark Knight. The drama will be produced by David S. Goyer of Phantom Four Production Company.

“I’ve been a fan of narrative podcasts for some time and was looking for the right story — returning to Batman seems like the perfect opportunity. We’ll be using the unique advantages of audio to dig into the more nightmarish members of the Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery.”

David S. Goyer, Producer

This is the first in a new line of DC audio dramas coming to Spotify. For other audio dramas to check out we suggest DC’s The Sandman, Marvel’s Wolverine: The Lost Trail, and Serial Box.

New Xbox Series S Image

An image of the Xbox Series S has leaked alongside a possible price. The system is thinner than the Series X and looks similar to the traditional Xbox One. A large black circular vent on the side appears to be the same as the one found on top of the Series X. The rumor of no disk tray is confirmed but we still do not have information on internal hardware. The price for the Series S is $299 and it is being rumored that the Series X is $499. This looks to be a still from an upcoming reveal trailer. Now that the image has leaked, expect Xbox to officially reveal the console soon.

Facebook Might Ban News in Australia

Facebook threatens to cut off all news to Australia if they enact a new law to pay publishers. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) are working on a new law that would force Facebook and similar companies to pay news sources for the content shared on their sites.

The reason for the law is publishers are complaining that more people are getting their news from the headlines and short blurbs found in their Facebook feeds and not going to the linked article on the publishers’ site. If the reader follows the link, then the publisher gets paid from ad revenue on their site. They are seeking revenue from the initial impression as well.

Facebook refuses to participate in this change because they claim the news sources can publish articles without limit and Facebook would have to pay every time. Facebook claims the offered alternatives like Facebook News but they were ignored. If the law is enacted, Facebook and Instagram will ban all news, both local and international, from being shared by users in Australia.

There is no clear right or wrong in this fight. We will be discussing the topic on the next episode of the podcast. Let us know your thoughts on the socials!
