Starfield Was Originally Planned to Be Multiplatform

In an interview with IGN, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, confirmed that Starfield was not originally planned to be an Xbox exclusive. Spencer said that Bethesda was considering making Starfield a multiplatform game, but that changed after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media in 2020.

Now that Bethesda is a first-party Xbox studio, Starfield will be exclusive to Xbox and PC. This has led to some criticism from PlayStation fans, who are upset that they won’t be able to play Starfield.

Spencer said that he understands why some people are disappointed that Starfield won’t be on PlayStation, but that he believes it’s the right decision for Xbox. He said that Xbox needs to have exclusive games to compete with PlayStation and that Starfield is a “major tentpole” for the Xbox brand.

Spencer also said that he hopes that Bethesda will continue to make multiplatform games in the future, but that he understands that some games will be exclusive to Xbox.

The decision to make Starfield an Xbox exclusive is a clear sign that Microsoft is serious about competing with PlayStation in the console wars. It remains to be seen whether this strategy will be successful, but it’s clear that Microsoft is willing to make big bets to win.

What does this mean for PlayStation fans?

The news that Starfield will be an Xbox exclusive disappoints PlayStation fans, but it’s not the end of the world. Plenty of great games are coming to PlayStation in the future, and there are even rumors that Sony is working on its own big-budget space RPG.

In the meantime, PlayStation fans can still enjoy Starfield by playing it on PC. Starfield will be released on PC and Xbox Series X/S on November 11, 2022.
