Chris Hemsworth Reflects on “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Expresses Desire to Redeem Character with Another Film

In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, Marvel star Chris Hemsworth expressed dissatisfaction with his portrayal of Thor in the 2022 blockbuster “Thor: Love and Thunder,” admitting that he “didn’t stick the landing” and is contemplating a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to deliver a more fitting conclusion to his character.

According to Hemsworth, his performance in “Love and Thunder” felt overly indulgent in comedy and improvisation, which led to a deviation from the character’s essence that fans had admired in “Thor: Ragnarok.” “I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair, reflecting on his approach to the role.

Despite the commercial success of the film, the actor revealed that he couldn’t forgive himself for the shift in tone and character depiction, which he believes did not resonate well with the audience. “I didn’t stick the landing,” he stated, signaling a strong desire to return to the role to make amends with fans.

The possibility of “Thor 5” had seemed unlikely, especially after Hemsworth had previously indicated his readiness to “close the book” on Thor, coupled with a busy schedule for Taika Waititi, the director of the previous Thor movies. However, changes in the MCU, including the departure of Jonathan Majors who was slated to be the next major villain, and a packed Phase 5 and 6 schedule, suggest there might be an opportunity for Hemsworth to revisit his iconic character.

As Marvel navigates these changes, including only having “Deadpool and Wolverine” slated for release in 2024, fans may yet get another chance to see Hemsworth wield Mjölnir. Hemsworth’s commitment to rectifying his previous performance could herald an exciting new chapter for Thor in the ever-evolving MCU narrative.
